The Amorphan Effect by K. E. Brungardt
Shapeshifting is impossible.
It’s not my only secret.
About to embark on a two-week journey to a far-off planet to become an exchange student at an alien university. I’m honored and thrilled to be chosen for this first-of-a-kind adventure.. But seconds before departing, Mom tasks me with uncovering the truth of how my brother, Devon, died on the same starship many years before.
I’m not a detective and Mom knows it so she must be desperate. I have very little to go on except an illegal copy of Mom’s memories that she pressed into my hand at the last second. How she expects me to find the answer all these years later baffles me, but, hey, it’s Mom so I’ll try in spite of the danger to myself.
Early in my journey with four other human students, I find out the hard way that I am a shapeshifter. This is huge because there are no others like me. At all. I don’t know why or how but I know it’s real. Is this new ability somehow connected to my brother’s death?
My sentient, telepathic hair and shapeshifting abilities are definitely assets during my investigation—as long as I can keep them hidden from everyone else, human and Imurian. But, when I uncover a deadly conspiracy, I need help—but who among my classmates and the Imurians can I trust?
With only two weeks onboard for this journey and very few clues, can I solve Devon’s mysterious death? An even bigger question is how do I keep my strange abilities secret and can I survive their discovery?

Author Bio:
K. E. Brungardt is an award-winning watercolor artist and author who has always had a vivid imagination. As a child, she daydreamed of being a horse or a deer or many other creatures, leading to a fascination with shapeshifting and a love for reading science fiction and fantasy. Retiring from family practice medicine in Wyoming, she and her husband moved to Arizona, where she turned to writing and returned to painting, using her sense of humor to infuse her books and, often, her paintings as well.
K. E. Brungardt’s writing transports readers to realms of wonder and amusement. She uses her imagination to color her worlds in books and create new worlds for you to explore.
In her spare time, she enjoys teaching watercolor classes, playing bridge, painting, and having fun since retirement. A lot of her time goes into writing books, keeping her on the couch and at the table, doing author things. Karen is a cat and dog and horse and bunny lover…and the list goes on. She’s fluffy enough to be a cat but not a cat burglar.
