Author Bio:
Simona Alexandrov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was the only child of young, argumentative, caring engineers. Despite the technical leanings of her family, Simona grew up to be an artist. From as long as she could remember, she found solace and inspiration in the depths of her soul, enriched by dreams, colors, and spiritual knowledge. While her classmates slogged through physics and math, Simona gravitated toward painting and writing, blessed with mentors and teachers who nurtured her talents. Her supportive yet sometimes financially strained parents found ways to sponsor her lessons. Simona secured prestigious scholarships when they couldn’t, carving her path outside the family’s professional expectations.
Art became her refuge, where she could exist free from familial pressures and grow as she wished. She graduated from the Muchina Academy of Art, the oldest European museum school in the “Venice of the North,” specializing in Ceramics. When she moved to the United States, she perfected her education at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. There, she was awarded the only full-tuition scholarship to develop European ceramic techniques in the U.S.
For over twenty-five years, Simona made her mark in Michigan and Massachusetts, creating ceramic vessels, exhibiting her work, painting, and teaching in various American institutions. Her creativity extended beyond ceramics; she started writing short stories and poetry in English. Joining Toastmasters to hone her public speaking skills, Simona discovered she preferred the written word to the spoken one. Once again, she was fortunate with mentors, editors, and supportive friends.
To make ends meet, she sold used books online. When her boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer, Simona delved into ketogenic eating and alternative medicine, learning how ketosis, fasting, salsa, and tango dancing, along with vitamin supplements, could aid his recovery. Her efforts paid off, and her boyfriend’s health and her own improved. She designed the cover of her first book, “Keto Kitchen Renaissance,” painting a vibrant watercolor of the couple in the kitchen, eager to share her knowledge, recipes, and anecdotes with readers seeking health and weight loss.
In her promotional material, Simona unearthed a 15-year-old story titled “Why I Write.” It went like this:
“When I write, I at least stop eating. I stop answering the phone after a few minutes, engrossed in memories, futuristic pictures, and spelling problems. Writing can be so exciting that I forget to check the time, often staying in my studio until 5 in the morning. What do I write about? I write about old loves, travel, intercultural experiences, and being a visual artist. Being a visual artist is a favorite negative topic of mine. After pouring my sorrows onto paper, I often find that being me isn’t so bad and move on to more creative projects. Travel is a favorite positive topic, requiring little energy and offering a pleasant excursion into the past. Personal love affairs are learning experiences and exercises in forgiving my past vices and mishaps. Writing about them can be as serious, humorous, and refreshing as a post-rain sky.
Writing in English is more complex than in Russian—pure torture—but it feels good when my English-speaking friends understand me. Plus, I have AI to help with my mistakes. Finally, writing remains one of my favorite activities.”
Now, fifteen years later, Simona also writes about ketogenic eating and cooking, often poking fun at this minor creative deviation of hers.
