About Harvey Girls 1908: Violet: Following Her Heart by Katherine Clair:
Violet Caraway knows she’s too tall and too thin to be fashionable, but she has Edward and she’s happy.
Then, just days before her wedding, she learns something about her financé that, looking back, she realizes should have noticed before. He leaves her in the midst of all their preparations, the life she thought would be hers lying in a jumble at her feet, tangled with bunting and ribbons.
She must begin again, and when her friend Lizzy helps her land a job as a Harvey Girl in her hometown, Syracuse, Kansas, a whole new world opens up. She finds she’s good at it, and she makes new friends. Free to make her own decisions, she begins a life of her own, joins the suffragettes, and begins a new relationship.
However, when her involvement with the suffragette movement threatens her new love, Violet must decide what kind of life hers will be. Will she trade the independence she’s earned for security with a man who will make her decisions for her?
Is there a man who can respect her independence, and love her for who she is?
