Inflammation is a natural process which helps our body protect itself, but our body can also make mistakes. Having a healthy diet is the best way to make sure that this does not happen, and also to deal with it when it does out of a mistake.
What is inflammation?
Inflammation – swelling, heat, redness, and pain – is part of the body’s natural protective response to harmful things. If we get burned or scraped, or if there is an infection, the inflammation response is there to promote healing by increasing the blood flow near the problem and bringing more white blood cells to the site. Chemicals called cytokines are released that helps protect your body, promote healing, and attack invading bacteria or viruses.
Sometimes, however, the body’s inflammation response can be due to an autoimmune problem or a false alarm, or it can fail to shut off when it’s no longer needed. When this happens, it’s very damaging. Chronic inflammation destroys healthy tissues, (sometimes even organs) and it can occur anywhere in the body. It’s been shown to trigger or contribute to various serious health problems, like diabetes, cancer, asthma, heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Fight inflammation with food!
The good news is that there are many foods that reduce inflammatory responses – and the more of these you can incorporate into your diet, the better you will feel. An anti-inflammatory diet contains increased amounts of antioxidants that will reduce the number of free radicals in your body that can damage cells and may increase the risk of acquiring the diseases we mentioned above.
