Matthias Krane is an eleven-year-old boy who lives in Milton, a small town in the Bible Belt. He makes good grades, obeys his parents, and goes to church. He does everything that is expected of him. But all that changes the day Matthias meets the man with the red tie. They retreat into Havenfield, a secret paradise where Matthias can indulge desires that his faith tries to suppress. In Havenfield, Matthias decides right and wrong. He decides who lives and who dies. He is God. He transforms into the Stillborn, a monstrous brute clad in armor of bone. But the more Matthias satisfies his vengeful lust, the more Havenfield merges with his waking life. Matthias has visions of the Stillborn everywhere. It lives inside of him. And it speaks to him. And Matthias will listen to it. But even if he doesn’t, he’s still damned. The man with the red tie will make sure of that.
