About Northern Exposure: Tell it to the Moose! : The Misadventures of Dr. Joel Flieschman and his Fellow Cecilians by Dr. Joseph D. Di Lella:
For all of us who experienced watching the unique television show, Northern Exposure, in the early 1990’s, we shared the life of not only Dr. Joel Fleischman but his off-and-on-again friend, lover, girlfriend, and bush pilot Maggie O’Connell – but we had the luxury of watching other prominent Cicely, Alaskan citizens as well.
We saw Ed Chigliak grow-up, become a more accomplished filmmaker, and find his birth father and mentor and his friend, Dr. Fleishman.
As for the KHBR DJ, Chris Stevens taught us about philosophy, art and the simple things in life that make us human.
We cannot forget what Maurice Minnifield brought to the table, too, as the ex-NASA astronaut and Cicely tycoon who dropped his bigoted opinions on the many diverse citizens who lived in and moved to his small town.
Speaking of unique characters, Adam and Eve brought their strange and unbelievable perspective on life, too.
Who can forget The Brick’s owner, Holling Vanceour, and Shelly Tambo, who became lovers and finally parents of a beautiful little girl
Marilyn brought a wisdom to Joel’s perspective on medicine and the patients he served.
Ruth-Anne ran the general store and finally fell in love with Walt.
And when Joel finally transformed into a more fully actualized person and left his life in Cicely through a magical portal, we finally learned the extent of how the small Alaskan town could change even the most up-tight, rigid and narrow-minded person in the world.
Let’s look at these characters and others before we finally review this author’s Top Fifty-Five episodes of Northern Exposure.
Then and only then can we tell our stories to Morty the Moose who may look at us in wonder, too, at the community he loved to walk through each and every day, observing the strange human beings that populated Cicely, Alaska.
