Empires Cost: Forged in Paper by William H Brothers
Empire’s Cost: Forged in Paper*
Book Two of The 500-Year Journey, a stand alone Historical Fiction novel.
From the markets and countinghouses of Amsterdam to the violent, uncertain waters of the Atlantic, *Empire’s Cost: Forged in Paper* follows the Schutt family as ambition, faith, and inheritance draw them into the expanding reach of the Dutch Republic.
As commerce transforms Europe, Willem Jansen Schutt seeks security for his family through trade, credit, and the promise of a future beyond the old world. But wealth built on paper can vanish with a ship, a storm, a war, or a signature. Through marriage, loss, sea crossings, and the relentless demands of the Dutch West India Company, the family learns that every opportunity carries a cost—and every choice leaves an inheritance.
Set between 1595 and 1638, this sweeping historical novel carries the Schutts from the rise of Dutch global power to the first uncertain days of New Amsterdam, where a new continent offers hope, danger, and the beginning of a legacy that will endure for centuries.
