Miss the good old days of the epic fantasy read? Looking for something new?
In the realm of Ostravah, magic lies broken and forgotten. Now, with the approaching millennium, an ancient strife that has spanned aeons will soon rekindle because the capricious Gods never rest – and they want their dues…
There is not much that Solancei, life-shield and cousin of Princess Iambre, will not do to protect her oldest, dearest friend.
In fact, there is not much that Iambre will not do for her salty-tongued, martial arts-loving cousin either, yet when Solancei finds herself trapped by an unpredictable opponent in an illegal, back-yard duel, little do either young women understand how their golden ideals are about to be tested in ways few could conjure up in their darkest nightmares.
Facing hard choices, Solancei must dig deep to extricate herself from a bad situation before it can escalate, but can she escape the trap awaiting her? Iambre is nothing if not a demanding heiress and if Solancei misses their scheduled appointment there could be worse than daggers to pay.
Without Solancei’s temperance, the headstrong and spoilt Iambre could well seize the opportunity to renew her indelicate association with Bilan, the Captain of the King’s own Lancers, and Solancei knows this can lead to nothing good. With everything to fight for, the Princess’ life-shield does not realise that this one rainy day will be the first in a world that’s about to be turned upside-down – because destiny and chance are calling, and they will not take ‘no’ for an answer.
“What’s the matter? Can’t get the girl you want?”
Solancei heard the teasing, double-edged words fly forth before she could check herself, but didn’t much care anyway. The perfectly-honed New Wood accent helped add slight to every syllable and with her eyes locked upon her sparring partner in casual readiness, her sardonic ‘concern’ held just the right measure of caustic disdain to make his nostrils flare, if only for a broken heartbeat.
It was precious little to feel encouraged by, but hey… right now she’d take what she could and run with it; the banter was a welcome chance to relieve some of the stress that came with the fact that she’d been stupid enough to almost let a rookie mistake cost her this jackal fight in the very first round. It was not good enough! She was uncommonly distracted today; for this, her mentor would have her guts – and worse. The thought made her want to grimace. She didn’t.
“Oh you may rest assured wench: I always get the ‘girl’ I want!” her opponent told her with a chilling slow drag of syllables. “It’s only ever a question of time – but I like to prolong the chase since it is by far the most enjoyable part.”
Smirking just enough to show his words were not meant to be all good-natured, the pale-eyed man faced her with a wolfish smile and flourished his haitu as if to remind her of the threat he posed, but she did not retreat, and he was unfortunately not put off.
“Now clearly,” he continued lightly, “you must be of a similar persuasion or we would not still be finding ourselves in filth to our boot laces, now would we?”
Sweeping a creeping unease aside and looking pointedly down her own once-green, now mud-splattered leathers, Solancei kept her feelings under lid.
“Speak for yourself,” she warned with a disdain-ripped grin, “As of yet, I can assure you there is no filth upon my laces! Nor, might I add, do I intend there to be anytime soon, but hey… chase me for pleasure if you like. It’s all you’ll get, I fear.”
