Lucky’s Tales of the Old West tells the story of how animals helped humans blaze a trail Westward. Through his magic talk bubbles, Lucky speaks with horses, cattle, buffalos, donkeys, bears, and even camels. Each has its own unique part to play in the winning of the West.
The book contains plenty of kid-friendly facts, but there’s also joking around and funny pictures to keep kids amused. Lucky’s style is at times irreverent, but never disrespectful. He loves to teach kids, and he even has an easy quiz at the end so kids can reinforce what they learned.
Hi, I’m Carla Chadwick. In 2016 I reconnected with an old friend, Terry Wilson, not realizing that would propel me into the world of children’s books. I’m delighted to have joined forces with him to create the Lucky the Talking Bird series. By incorporating images of Lucky the rescued parrot with Terry’s photos from decades of world travel and photographing animals for pet magazines, we’ve created a series for children that is designed to both entertain and teach.
Lucky is a real bird, a red-crowned Amazon parrot that just happens to be on the endangered species list. Terry rescued him in 2006, when Lucky was just a tiny baby that had fallen out of a tree. He now lives with Terry, who can vouch for the fact that Lucky is quite a scamp. It doesn’t take much to infuse Lucky with character in our books–it’s already there.
