3 years ago, I was out of work, broke, and unsure of where my next paycheck would come from or how I would pay my bills. I had responsibilities that were baying for my blood and no way to meet these responsibilities.
Like most millennials, I applied for jobs at several reputable institutions—I’m a trained anthropologist, a major, by the way, Zippia.com says is one of the toughest majors for finding jobs after college—but often failed to land these jobs thanks in part to the nature of my chosen career path and the shrinking job market.
That was 3 years ago. Today, I don’t worry about money. Today, I can travel to dig sites such as Jebel Irhoud, the cave where scientists found the oldest fossils of man, the Cave of El Castillo where some of the oldest known paintings in the world are, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Stonehenge, and the Great Wall of China to name but a few.
I can do all this without incessantly worrying about whether traffic shall keep me from getting to work on time (and getting a tongue-lashing or reprimand from the boss). I can travel to places that would have otherwise required the backing of a museum all without having to worry about how I’ll pay for the trips, how much I working each month, how much money I’m earning each month, or even how to allocate the money I earn to the various needs I have to meet. I can pay my travel expenses to these archeological sites all without worrying about how doing so will affect my ability to pay my recurring bills.
Today, I have money in my account; I’m debt free, I own a modest apartment, don’t own a car—hello Uber— only work a few hours (sometimes even minutes) a day and still manage to earn enough to live a free life, a life where I can pursue what I want without overly worrying about money.
