Zeena Nackerdien writes poems using news headlines and pages torn from ordinary life. Blending nature, science, history, fantasy and politics, the result is a unique take on a variety of topics, including the struggles of small business owners, societal expectations of men and women, refugees, butterflies and a patient’s experience of chronic pain. The reader is taken on a journey that resonates with anyone thinking about what it means to be an American and the common ties that bind all of humanity.
Innermost is a collection of both free verse and fixed verse poetry written over a period of half a decade about every emotion felt inside the human heart. These poems will transport you to a whole other world within the innermost depths of the human soul.
A short collection of poetry. Every poem has a one word title, each title having a deep meaning. This book does not have proper capitalization which creates a unique style and keeps the “aesthetic” of the poetry. Divided into 4 sections or chapters.

A poet once said that poetry and beauty are born from pain…I believe this, because I’ve lived this. A brain aneurysm and massive stroke changed my life, causing me to lose verbal and physical function for many years. As an AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation) survivor, skin cancer survivor, and being legally blind, it would’ve been easy to give up and quit. Instead, I became a fighter and began living life to its fullest, never taking anything for granted.
I’ve decided to write a collection of poetry to express the words that I’ve held in my heart and soul all these years. This collection expresses the way I feel and how I view life, love, friendship, sadness, and loss. I’m a new and improved woman, life has taught me so many lessons, and now is the time to share what I’ve learned with the world–this is A Piece of Me.
