Jeb Benjamin and his friend, Zach Edwards, dreamed of traveling to California to gain their fortune when released from Camp Douglas, an infamous Union POW hellhole. The road to California isn’t a straight line.
When the Confederate veterans visited Jeb’s sister’s ranch in the Rio Grande valley to tell her he’s going west, they find the ranch house in flames, his sister’s family dead, and the ranch’s cattle stolen. Death and destruction haunted the veterans.
At that time, a border war flared with General Juan Cortiña’s irregulars. Jeb learned Juan’s younger brother, Miguel, had crossed the Rio to raid the ranch, and upon leaving, kidnapped Jeb’s fourteen-year-old niece, Rebecca. The Cortiñas used her as an international pawn.
The Army reported Cortiña lived in an adobe-walled fort. The U.S. Cavalry couldn’t take it without artillery. Two men don’t stand a chance of taking it.
Jeb and Zach were determined to do what the U.S. Army or Texas Lawmen couldn’t do—go into Mexico to bring Becky home … or die trying.
